Description

  • 70cm. high.
depicted with his head slightly turned to dexter, clad in waistcoat adorned with orders to the revers, a scarf knotted around his neck

Condition

In overall good condition with some minor dents, marks and scratches. Few smaller chips (as to his proper left revers, his collar, scarf and to the socle). Some paint losses, as visible in the catalogue image. Painting refreshed in some places, for example at the face.

Catalogue Note

Jeronimo de Vries, residing on the Herengracht 483 on the prestigious 'Golden Bend' of the city, was a colourful and versatile figure in Amsterdam's late 18th and early 19th century intellectual society.
Poet, writer, literary historian and art agent, he kept company with the most important and influential littérateurs and collectors of his time. 
Among others, he worked for the council of Amsterdam and served as curator of the Academy.
