Description
comprising a figure of Guandi on horseback, clad in a suit of armour and holding the reins with his left hand, on base of breaking waves, a small seated figure of Budai, two figures of Bhuddhistic lions, each with a foot on a brocade ball, and a small figure of an elephant, standing four square with its head lowered
Condition
These five figures are in good condition with the exception of:
Figure of Guandi: restoration to the upper left tip of his head scarf and an associated chip, to the middle section of the reins, and to the tip of the horse's tail, all of which appear to have been clean breaks; a loss to the back right tip of the head scarf; a short hairline firing crack to the horse's back right leg; minor glazing imperfections; and very light overall surface scratches.
Elephant: a 0.8cm chip to the tail; loss to the point of the right husk; and very minor glaze-firing imperfections and overall scratches to the surface.
Figure of Budai: loss to the tips of the peach spray he holds in his left hand; three short hairline firing lines to the underside of the base; and minor glazing imperfections.
Buddhistic lions: loss to the tip of the tail, hairline cracks and firing lines to the underside of the belly, to the back and hind legs, one of which extends down the base, short hairline firing lines to locks of hair and to the underside of the base, and a hairline glaze crack running down the centre of the face of one lion; the other with a loss to what appears to have been a ball on the corner of the base, loss to the two tips of the brocade hanging from its mouth, hairline firing lines to some locks of hair and to its chin, a firing crack running through the middle of his crown; and minor glazing imperfections and minor surface scratches to both figures.
