Description

  • "A Meeting with Puck"
352 by 504mm., oil painting on canvas-covered board, signed and dated 'Arthur Rackham | 1923' in lower left corner, framed

a fine rackham oil painting showing puck and three girls in a woodland scene. oil paintings by rackham are rare at auction.

An entry in Rackham's notebook dated around 1924 lists an oil painting with the title 'A Meeting with Puck and his Friends' (the final three words are scored through). The name 'Royce' is added.

It appears that the purchaser was Sir Henry Royce (1863-1933) of Rolls-Royce fame. It is thought that Rackham was also commissioned by Royce to paint his portrait.

The reverse of the board shows an unfinished Alpine landscape which has been rejected or abandoned. The topography can be identified as a view in Switzerland which Rackham had visited in 1899.
