- "Oh Jane", said Miss Carter (who wore pink)
- signed with fly device; also signed, dated 1968, titled and inscribed on a label attached to the reverse: "Its not what he said but what he did".... and she absentmindedly stared at Mother who filled her cup with tea and waited.. but just as she was about to tell her what it was that he had done, someone called so Miss Carter left saying she would tell Mother all about it later, what a pity she went, because I know Mother never found out and I had been so good and kept George quiet although he would stare at her and I was so anxious lest Mother should see him and say "Hush, little pigs have big ears" and the year was 1906.

Condition
There is a light surface scratch to the cat's head, and to the chair on which it sits. The surface of the work is slightly dirty and would benefit from a clean. Otherwise it appears to be in its original condition. Held in a gilt, wood and plaster frame with a hessian inlay. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals no evidence of retouching.
