Description

carved from a manipulated bamboo root, the seal face carved with the characters xi yuan in archaic script

Catalogue Note

In order to form this shape, the bamboo was obviously constrained during its growth so that a strange form matures.  A twisted stalk of bamboo in the form of a camel is illustrated in Gerard Tsang and Hugh Moss, Arts from the Scholar's Studio, Hong Kong, 1986, cat.no. 19 and another with a head of a dragon, in Ip Yee and Laurence Tam, Chinese Bamboo Carving, Hong Kong Museum of Art, 1978, vol. 1, p.540, cat.no. 200.
