Description

  • height: 9.5cm, 3 3/4 in
the pommel-form handle of Kalgan jasper, the collar chased and pierced with scrolls above foliate-engraved cushion, the bloodstone matrix engraved with the arms of Piwnicki, opening to reveal two inner matrices of carnelian and milky agate engraved with initials, 72 standard

Condition

Excellent condition. There is a horizontal line through the stone of the handle, which appears as a possible crack but is in fact a natural inclusion in the stone.

Catalogue Note

Andreas Spiegel was born in 1797 and is recorded as working from 1830-62, primarily as a maker of gold boxes.  A gold Imperial Presentation snuff box by Spiegel, which sold, Sotheby's Geneva, 16 May 1995, lot 80, was given by the future Emperor Alexander II to Prince Mikhail Semenovich Voronzov in 1850.  See also A. von Solodkoff, Russian Gold and Silver, 1981, pl. 208.
