Catalogue Note

Renowned for his rapid, fluid portrayals of battle scenes, Emile-Jean-Horace Vernet was also a keen painter of Orientalist subjects.  The Crimean War and other conflicts between the Russian and Ottoman Empires, afforded him and painters of his circle ample opportunity to demonstrate their talents.  The offered lot shows Ural Cossacks involved in a skirmish with Ottoman troops and Caucasus tribesmen during the Russo-Turkish War of 1828-29.  In the foreground, a Cossack officer has the upper hand over a tribesman on an ornately tacked Arab steed while the battle rages behind them and on into the distance.
