Provenance

According to a John S. Walton, Inc., invoice dated February 11, 1972, "This chair was made for Michael Gratz, prominent banker and merchant in Philadelphia, descended to a son, Benjamin, then to Benjamin's daughter, who married a grandson of Henry Clay, the patriot.  It remained in the Gratz family until the early 1950's."
