Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. A Visit to the Physician The canvas is lined and the paint layer is stable. There is some minor restored paint loss to the background above the standing figure, left, and augmented paint to the same figure's hat and breeches. The seated figure has augmented thinnesses to his hat and elsewhere there is a minor scattering. Overall, the painting is in a good condition with a slight tonal improvement to be had with the removal of the varnish. Offered in a tortoise shell frame in good condition A Musical Company in an Interior The canvas is lined and the paint surface is stable. The left hand edge has been repainted where previous paint damage has occurred. The quite coarse canvas texture can be seen through the thin paint layers, the thinness of these painted areas has been exasperated by over cleaning. Reinforcing of the paint in these areas has been undertaken e.g. the light in the window, the striped costume of the standing figure, right, the hair of both seated figures, the shadows in the foreground and the brown panelling in the background. Other areas are in good condition."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues.
