Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The paint layer is stable and there is some raised paint along the shrinkage cracks. There is some minor retouched paint loss along the bottom edge. Apart from this , and the remains of an old patchy discoloured varnish, the painting is in good well-preserved condition. Offered in a gold painted frame, in good condition."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

Catalogue Note

There are known to be three further portraits of the young Charles X by Danloux: the first is in the Musée Condé in Chantilly; the second is in the Collection of the Earl of Stair in Lochinch Castle, Dumfriesshire; and the third is in Arniston House, Midlothian.

Charles X ruled as King of France and Navarre from 1824 until the French Revolution of 1830, when he abdicated.
