Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The panel is poplar. There is evidence of previous worm infestation. There are vertical splits causing instability to the paint surface, e.g. the back of the left hand and the lower right elbow. There is a knot, lower left, causing the surface to raise, and one or two blisters. Worm damage has come through to the paint layer and restored worm holes can be seen across the surface. The paint is generally well-preserved and the impasto to the dress and headdress is in good original condition, as is much of the background. The varnish is heavily discoloured and its removal would improve the tonality. Offered in a gilt wood frame with some losses."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."
