Description

  • oil on panel

Provenance

Major H.R. Holden;
By whom sold, London, Sotheby's, 12 November 1969, lot 3, for £ 4600.
With David Koetser, Zurich;
With P. de Boer, Amsterdam, by 1973 (all of the above as by Jan Coelenbier).

Literature

H.-U. Beck, Jan van Goyen 1596 - 1656, Amsterdam 1973, vol. II, p. 284, cat. no. 628a I, kopie IX.

Condition

The actual painting is slightly warmer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel seems to consist of 2 planks, and has been cradled. A retouched horizontal crack is visible running from the right edge, just below the upper edge. There's a tiny fleck of paint loss in the figures on the boat lower left. Small discoloured retouchings can be observed throughout in the sky, and small retouchings are visible in the water lower centre and in the foliage lower right. The paint surface is covered with a dirty layer of varnish. Inspection under Ultra-Violet light confirms the aforementioned retouchings and reveals additional tiny scattered retouchings in the trees and houses, and additional ones in the sky. Offered in a plain fruit wood frame, in good condition. (MW)

Catalogue Note

A label on the reverse records a traditional attribution to Jan Coelenbier (1610-1677). The composition derives from a lost original by Jan van Goyen (1596-1656), which is known through several variants and copies.1
