Provenance

Sale, London, Sotheby's, 18 April 2000, lot 100.

Condition

Both paintings are less red than the catalogue illustrations suggest. Both canvasses have been relined (glue), and both paint surfaces seem to be in very good condition. Minor thinnes can be observed in the backgrounds, in the draped cloths, and in the vases. In the former painting, retouchings can be observed in the flowers, e.g. in the roses, in the flowers upper right, in the leaves and in the vase, and there's a diagonal repaired scratch in the lower right corner. In the latter painting, retouchings can be observed in the roses lower left, in the roses on the right and in the anemones. A small repaired damage is also visible along the upper edge. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals tiny scattered retouchings throughout both compositions, as well as strengthening in the foliage. Offered in a plain gilt wood frame, a few tiny chips.
