Description

  • Nicolaes Maes
  • Portrait of a gentleman, standing three-quarter length, holding a pair of brown gloves in his left hand
  • signed (strengthened) and indistinctly dated centre right: J N O/ MAES 166...
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The catalogue illustration is representative for the actual painting. The canvas has a slightly stiff relining (glue), which has somewhat flattened the paint surface. The borders of the original canvas are slighty visible to the front. A small dent can be seen in the figure's coat centre right, but otherwise, no major damages seem to be apparent. Some thinnes can be observed in the background and in the brownish tones in the foreground. Discoloured retouchings are visible in the background, in the figure's collar, gloves and coat. The paint surface is covered with a fine layer of dirt and a discoloured layer of varnish. Inspection under ultra violet light, furthermore, reveals additional small scattered retouchings throughout, e.g. in the figure's face, hands and collar. Also a slightly larger retouched scratch is revealed in the lower right corner. Offered in a plain black painted wood frame with a gilt fillet, in good condition. (ML/MW)
