Condition
The canvas has a firm relining.
The paint surface is stable if abraided in some areas and under a yellow varnish.
There is a vertical 25 cm restored tear to the left of the sitter's face and a small area of restoration (1cm by 1cm) above his head. Inspection under UV light reveals old scattered retouchings.
Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame in reasonable condition with some minor knocks

This self-portrait is known in two other versions: the first (perhaps the prime original) is in the Staatsgalerie in Schleitheim (see J. de Maere, Illustrated Dictionary of 17th Century Flemish Painters, vol. II, Brussels 1994, p. 1046, reproduced). A third autograph version was sold Paris, Millon & AssociƩs, 18 March 2002, lot 22, for 25,000 Euros.
