Provenance

From the William Reeves Collection

Catalogue Note

Although signed only "Duport", the first item is almost certainly by the famous eighteenth-century violoncellist Jean-Pierre Duport (1741-1818), rather than his younger brother Jean-Louis. The elder Duport supervised music at the court of Friedrich William II in Berlin from 1787 until 1806.  Mozart composed a set of variations K.573 on one of Duport's minuets and Beethoven composed for him his Cello Sonatas, op.5.
