The REF. 5013' case is highly reminiscent of one of Patek Philippe's most important vintage repeating wristwatches, no. 198.212. That watch, also made in a platinum tortue case, was made for Henry Graves Jr. and is illustrated in Huber, M., & Banbery, A., Patek Philippe Wristwatches, Second Edition, p.315, pl. 470a-d , it is also exhibited in the Patek Philippe Museum.

To the best of our knowledge, this is the only piece known to the market with a black dial.

Launched in 1992, REF. 5013 features 515 individual parts and is the second most complicated wristwatch after the Sky Moon Tourbillon (see lot 1811). The popularity of REF. 5013 is its self-winding movement and differentiates itself from the manual wound tourbillon movement of REF. 6016, composed of 506 parts.

Patek Philippe produced a small number of minute repeating wristwatches during the early part of the 20th century and discontinued production in the late 1950s. To celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Patek Philippe in 1989, a minute repeating wristwatch was once again introduced but for the first time with an automatic calibre. This innovation spurred Patek Philippe to build the REF. 5014, combining the extra complications of the perpetual calendar, moon-phases and retrograde calendar.

The retrograde date hand moves along a 270 degree arc and at midnight of the last day of each month, it flies back to the first of the month. During the precisely controlled fly-back phase, the hand is disconnected from the drive train and is cleverly captured back on the 1st of the month to ensure it doesn't slip forward by a day.
