The very first double dialled wristwatch to be produced by this firm, this watch includes twelve complications, all controlled by its six hundred and eighty-six parts. The combination of functions is stunning, including: the perpetual calendar with the display of retrograde date, day, month and the leap-year cycle, sidereal time, the orbit and phases of the moon and the sky chart with the motion of the stars.

A sky chart of the northern hemisphere, or southern hemisphere upon request, rotates counter-clockwise beneath a sapphire crystal with a golden ellipse that frames the part of the sky visible from a specified location. In connection with this visual artistry, the other primary innovation comes with the beautiful and resonant auditory capabilities.  Never before in a wristwatch has the minute repeat struck with two "cathedral" gongs. Due to Patek Philippe's development of a new steel alloy, in combination with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, and the extended lengths of the gongs the watch produces a long and harmonious reverberation.

In addition to these two facets and the many other complications the "Sky Moon Tourbillon" presents an aesthetically beautiful piece. The polished case, the opaline dial and the attention to the engraving on the case all highlight the amazing features within this form. The "Sky Moon Tourbillon" exists not only as Patek Philippe's most complicated wristwatch but also as a tribute to the watchmaker's effortless combination of form and function.

On 5th October 2000, Patek Philippe unveiled the Star Caliber 2000, one of the most complicated pocket watches in the history of horology, with a fascinating suite of astronomical indications. Six months later, Patek Philippe created the REF. 5002 "Sky Moon Tourbillon" with Caliber 109- an oversized grand complication wristwatch with a miniaturized Sky Moon mechanism based on the astronomical module developed for the Star Caliber 2000.

The REF. 5002, the "Sky Moon Tourbillon", exists as the most complicated wristwatch ever produced by Patek Philippe. The technical and aesthetic beauty of this model encouraged a five year waiting list in effect by the end of 2001, just a few months after the initial presentation. The company's exacting standards, combined with the fact that only one of the Patek Philippe's one hundred and eighty watchmakers is capable of the manufacture, allows for a production run of two peices per year in gold or platinum.
