Condition

Mounted on album card, with some foxing on the mount. The print with three small stains at the upper left corner. With a retouched line (approx. 4 cm, apparently a scratch on the negative) at the lower edge at right, and a smaller one (approx. 1 cm) at the upper edge at right. Overall in excellent condition.

Catalogue Note

Cette épreuve, ainsi que celles proposées dans les lots 41 à 44, figurèrent dans l'album « Fontainebleau » conçu vers 1850. Elle fut exposée au Musée d'Orsay, en 2002, datée de 1852.
L'album contenait onze calotypes de Le Gray pris dans la Forêt de Fontainebleau. La simplicité de la reliure et l'absence de toute signature ou numérotation indiquent qu'il s'agit sans doute d'un ensemble conçu par Le Gray lui-même ou par un familier. « Les tirages illustrent des recherches d'effets de couleur: ce sont des essais d'artiste. Cette épreuve-ci est poussée au noir presque à l'excès, tous les détails disparaissent au profit d'un sombre enchevêtrement végétal. » (Cat. Expo.
