Catalogue Note
Patek Philippe launched REF. 3970 in 1986 and continued production until 2004. It was created following the success of the exceptional REF. 2499, also a perpetual calendar chronograph watch. This model was created in four series. The present example belongs to the second series, which is distinguished from its predecessor by the introduction of the screw-down back. As a result, this and the succeeding series of the model would be modified with the letter 'E' for étanche, or waterproof. As REF. 3970 was well-received for its combination of chronograph and perpetual calendar complications, Patek Philippe responded by increasing its production run for each subsequent series. As such, examples belonging to early series, such as the present model, are rarer and less frequently seen at auction than examples belonging to later ones. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time to present example has been offered at auction.
Accompanied by a Patek Philippe Certificate of Origin, Instruction Manual and booklets in leather folder, a setting pin, solid case back and a presentation box with outer card box.
