Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This painting is in very good condition, particularly considering the tendency of this artist's paintings to be in less than good condition. The canvas has been lined and the paint layer is dirty yet not unattractive as is. Beneath the old varnish there may be some retouches. The retouches that are currently visible under ultraviolet light have been applied in a few spots in the forehead, in the background to the right of the neck and in a spot in the lower left and right. If there are any other retouches beneath the old varnish, they are not immediately apparent. The condition of this painting is clearly good and cleaning will not reveal more than a few older restorations.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
