Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This painting has a very old glue lining and the paint layer has been recently cleaned and retouched. The frame is good and attractive. Restorations have been applied very nicely yet quite consistently throughout the landscape and sky beyond the figures. However, the animals, the figures and the ground on which they stand are all in lovely condition with hardly any restorations. The neatness of the paint layer in the upper portion of the picture has probably caused some softening to the palette which has been restored. However, the picture looks well and should be hung as is.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.

Catalogue Note

This painting, and its pendant The Riding School, which is similarly signed, inscribed and dated (lot 24 in 1809 sale [see Provenance]; Hofstede de Groot cat. no. 274 and National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin, cat. no. 544 [see Literature]), must have been among the very last pictures Dujardin painted. We know that he travelled to Italy with Joan Reynst in 1675 and this pair of pictures must have been painted in 1678 just before he left Rome to go to Venice, where he would die later that year.
