Description

Set in the center with an emerald-cut sapphire weighing 49.98 carats, the front decorated with chased scrollwork applied with polychrome enamel, further set with emerald-cut sapphires and emeralds, a cushion-shaped ruby and split pearls, supporting 5 pendant pearls, the reverse inscribed with the motto `NE QVID NIMIS 1562'  in black enamel, along with a polychrome enamel coat of arms beneath the monogram MVR, the borders accented with white enamel strapwork.

Condition

See Gubelin report stating the sapphire is of Sri Lankan origin, no indications of heating. It is a medium slightly grayish blue and is heavily included, with heavy abrasions at the facet junctions. The additional sapphires, rubies and emeralds are heavily abraded as well. The pearls have a waxy luster. Enameling shows small areas of damage and loss, but the piece is in respectfully good condition for its age.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion. Illustrations in the catalogue may not be actual size. Prospective purchasers are reminded that, unless the catalogue description specifically states that a stone is natural, we have assumed that some form of treatment may have been used and that such treatment may not be permanent. Our presale estimates reflect this assumption.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.

Catalogue Note

Accompanied by Gubelin report no. 0601065 stating that the sapphire is of Sri Lankan origin; no indications of heating.

The reverse of this cross is an almost identical replica of the Pectorial Cross of the Abbot of Averbode dating from 1562, currently in the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Berlin.

The coat of arms and mitre belonged to Mathaeus van Rethen who was the Abbot of Averbode at the time the original cross was made. His motto translates as 'Nothing Too Much' ; the text underneath as 'Sir Matthew van Rethan, Abbot of Averbode, decorated me with pure gold and precious stones'.
