A very unusual glass portrait medallion circa 1700

Description

  • 18 by 12cm; 7 by 4¾ in.
of rounded rectangular form, the thick glass moulded intaglio with a head and shoulders portrait, probaby King William III, in profile facing right, set in a brass frame, the upper surface with set with plaster relief of the portrait (chips and some surface scratches to glass, some losses to plaster)

Condition

There are some chips and some polishing around the edges of the medallion. There is a horizontal scratch beneath the portrait, approx. 1½in. length. Also some light surface scratches. Thre are some losses to the plaster

The process for making cast portraits was developed by Bernard Perrot ( 1619-1709), an Itallian glass-maker who was granted permission to establish a glasshouse in Oléans in July 1662.
