Description

  • Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company
  • A Rare Pair of Andirons
  • bronze and wrought iron

Literature

Alastair Duncan, Tiffany Lamps and Metalware, Woodbridge, Suffolk, 2007, p. 454 (for related examples)

Condition

Generally very good condition. The bronze surfaces throughout have been cleaned, and show minor surface scratches and abrasions consistent with use and age. The bronze tones range from a golden to a slightly more copper tone, possibly due to heat exposure. As expected, the wrought iron log supports show considerable wear and discoloration from prior use, and one has a split at the rear vertical foot (but is stable).
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.

Catalogue Note

Few Tiffany andirons have survived because of the very nature of their utilitarian function.  The present lot is rarer still in that it retains its original crossbar.
