Condition

Overall in very good condition. The shade with approximately 20-24 cracks to the glass scattered throughout. The shade with surface soiling throughout, particularly around the top crown of the shade armature and lead lines, which would benefit from a sensitive cleaning. The high points on the top bronze armature of the shade with gentle rubbing. The execution of the leading and sculptural branchwork on the shade is particularly well executed, with a rich deep brown patina. The base, which has a dappled verdigris and brown patina, has some gentle rubbing and light surface wear consistent with age and use. The base switch appears to be original with some light wear to the edges from use. The sockets appear to be original. A superb example of this rare model, with a spectacular selection of glass and unusual treatment of the sculptural branchwork on the shade exterior, which imparts a tremendous amount of depth and tactility to the shade.

Catalogue Note

The "Apple Blossom" lamp is believed to have been designed by Clara Driscoll shortly after she designed the "Wisteria" lamp (see lot 70) in 1901.  The "Apple Blossom," along with the firm's "Trumpet Creeper" and "Grape" lamps, share the same overall form and bronze armature as the "Wisteria" and were built on the same wooden mold.

This lamp is distinguished by its atypical selection of glass--namely the use of textured and confetti glass--and its rare use of patinated copper foil (rendered over the leaded glass) to sculpt the branches which trail down the exterior of the shade.  These attributes impart a tremendous amount of depth and texture to the shade.  Of the few known examples of this rare pattern, the branchwork is articulated in leaded glass alone.  The present lot is the only "Apple Blossom" shade presently known to feature this exquisite and labor-intensive sculpted branchwork.
