Literature

M.G. Barberini, Life and the Arts in the Baroque Palaces of Rome, 1999, Bard Graduate School, p. 186. The exuberance of the carving on this piece is reminiscent of the vegetal floral ornamentation which was invented by Johann Paul Schor (1615-1674) around the middle of the 17th century. He was influenced by his masters, Pietro da Corona (1597-1669) and Gian-Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680). The motif of the flowers or girasole is intended as a compliment to the viewer. The flower faces the viewer and equates his or her beauty with that of the sun.
