Catalogue Note

First edition, and the work which established Roberts' reputation as a topographic and architectural artist. Produced five years before the Holy Land series, these lithographs demonstrate his drafting skill and his ability to depict mood in a landscape. Roberts worked on every stone, the figures in many of them being entirely his own drawing. Indeed, he erased some of the stones entirely, so the work took him seven months instead of the two he had planned.
