stoneware, modelled standing wearing a wig and with wings folded behind his back

Provenance

This bird was purchased directly from the Martin Brothers by the present vendor's grandfather

Condition

A large model with more presence than suggested by the catalogue illustration. The colours are richer than they appear with more contrast. There are two manufacturing holes from the underside of the base through the legs of the bird where it originally would have been fixed to a wooden base. There are some short firing cracks around this area to the underside of the base, one of which is just visible on the side of the foot but is covered by glaze. This is not subsequent damage and is not visible when the piece in standing on a level surface. There is a small glaze flaw to the underside of the foot, approximately 1cm by 4mm which appears to have been caused when the glaze ran during firing. Body with a couple of firing cracks to the interior around screw holes. The modelling of the features is finer than appears in the catalogue illustration. Some short firing cracks are visible to the interior. A large and imposing example of this unusual subject.
