Catalogue Note

The type of this Madonna affiliates to the marble statue of Santa Susanna by the Flemish artist François Duquesnoy (1597-1643) from 1630-33, one of four sculptures depicting virgin martyrs for the church of Santa Maria di Loreto in front of the Roman Forum of Trajan.
Duquesnoy, famous for his Roman Baroque influenced style, became prominent in South Netherlandish sculpture during the second half of the 17th century after his return from Italy and establishing a workshop in Antwerp.
