Catalogue Note

a beautiful copy in a contemporary binding, with a distinguished provenance, of the "first and greatest classic of modern economic thought" (Printing and the Mind of Man).

"The Wealth of Nations had no rival in scope or depth when published and is still one of the few works in its field to have achieved classic status, meaning simply that it has sustained yet survived repeated reading, critical and adulatory, long after the circumstances which prompted it have become the object of historical enquiry...". (Donald Winch, Oxford DNB)

"No society can surely be flourishing and happy, of which the far greater part of the members are poor and miserable. It is but equity, besides, that they who feed, cloath and lodge the whole body of the people, should have such a share of the produce of their own labour as to be themselves tolerably well fed, cloathed and lodged"
