Catalogue Note

Lichtenstein "has been successful in establishing objects as real while treating them illusionistically. Notably, this has been in his ceramic pieces. There, three-dimensional forms have been treated descriptively as if they were in two dimensions. The formal illusion imitates and also modifies the lateral shapes (of which it has become part); the sense of the whole is of decoration enhancing and animating the matter of fact, of two experiences proposed as one." - Gene Baro, Roy Lichtenstein: Technique as Style, Art International 12, no. 9, November, 1968
