Catalogue Note

This exceptional mask is likely the work of Simeon Stilthda, a Haida carver working during the second half of the ninetheenth century. Related examples of his work can be found in the Royal British Columbia Museum, Victoria, and the Museum of Natural History, New York, and are illustrated in American Indian Art Magazine, "Two Artists From Yan," vol. 23, no. 3, Summer 1998.

The illustrated photograph, entitled "New Year's Masquerade 1891" taken at Skidegate, Britsh Columbia features a young woman in the back row  wearing a frontlet attributed to Simeon Stilthda. The photograph also shows the traditional facial markings worn by Haida women and that are represented on this mask.
