cf. RMN (1996 : 219, n° 228) pour un couteau à l'iconographie comparable, collecté par Speiser entre 1910 et 1912, conservé au Museum für Völkerkunde de Bâle (inv. n° Vb 3089).
Selon Hoffmann (RMN, 1996 : 217-219), "le dessin sculpté sur les manches [des couteaux en bois à laplap], était intimement lié au statut du propriétaire, c'est-à-dire au rang qu'il occupait dans le système de grades sukwe (Banks) ou huka (Torres)". La représentation de figures humaines stylisées était réservée aux membres les plus hauts gradés.
