Catalogue Note

The artist was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of immigrants from Bavaria, Hans (later John) and Bertha Herkomer. Trained at the Art Students' League in New York, he travelled to England in 1881 to live with his first cousin Hubert Herkomer (later Sir Hubert von Herkomer) and to work in the Herkomer studio at Bushey Heath. He later studied in Paris and Munich. His professional career commenced with well received exhibits at the Paris Salon (from 1884) and the Royal Academy (from 1886). In 1887 he showed a moody portrait of Hubert Herkomer (now Museum of Fine Arts, San Francisco) at the Royal Academy.
