- "masquerade" outside the grand opera house, paris, in carnival time, maskers coming out from a ball from the inside
- signed l.r.: Beadle; signed and inscribed with the title and the artist's address on an old label attached to the reverse of the frame and further signed and inscribed with the title on the stretcher

Condition
STRUCTURE:
The canvas has been relined and the structure is sound and secure.
SURFACE:
There are traces of craquelure to the paint surface, particularly in the upper left quarter of the work. Otherwise the surface is clean with some frame abrasions along the top border.
FRAME:
Held in an ornate plaster gilt frame in fair condition.
ULTRAVIOLET :
UV light reveals retouching to frame abrasions on all four edges. There is also infilling to craquelure on the pink dress and the horses hind legs. A discoloured varnish which is particularly prominent to the centre of the composition prevents further examination.
COLOUR COMPARISON:
The colours are more subtle the illustration suggests, particularly the light source in the background.
