Catalogue Note
Although Beechey was English and the son of the portrait painter Sir William Beechey, his wife was Irish and they moved to Monkstown, Co. Dublin where they lived until 1877. Beechey had reached the rank of Admiral in the Navy and painted many seascapes whilst working with the Navy in Shannon and off the West coast of Ireland. After his retirement in 1864, he was able to devote his time to capturing the coastal views and activities closer to home in co. Dublin.
