Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The hammered copper panel is in good condition apart from one small split to the left edge. The paint layer is stable but previous instability, coupled with a shrinkage of the paint layer, has led to restored paint loss to the crib, the right of the Madonna's feet and her left sleeve, the red blanket of the crib, the pink dress of the Madonna and the drapery above her head and Christ's upper right thigh. A filigree of pale craquelure is more apparent in some areas. A tonal improvement would be achieved if the varnish was removed."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."
