Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The copper panel is in good condition with only a small deformation to the upper right corner. There are some small pin prick paint losses here and there. Mary Magdalene's dress has some restored paint loss at the bottom as has the forearm to the female figure lower right and the figure at the top of the ladder. The varnish is degraded and discoloured and the tonality would improve with its removal."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

Catalogue Note

This is a copy in reverse after Rubens' famous picture on the high altar of the cathedral at Antwerp (see M. Jaffé, Rubens, Milan 1989, p. 183, no. 189A, reproduced), and was thus certainly copied after one of the numerous reproductive prints in reverse.
