Catalogue Note

The following tiara was purchased during the 1930s by Mervyn Horatio Herbert, Viscount Clive, for his wife Vida Cuthbert, daughter of Capt James Cuthbert DSO. Vida Cuthbert married the Viscount in 1934, the second son of the 4th Earl of Powis, who bequeathed Powis castle to the National Trust in 1952. The 4th Earl's family was marred by a series of tragedies, his first son died of his wounds at the battle of the Somme in 1916, while his wife was killed in a car crash in 1929, his younger son, Mervyn Horatio Herbert, was killed in a plane crash while on active service in 1943.
