Catalogue Note

Smith's catalogue (see Literature) lists two almost identical entries for this composition, though with some differences such as the number of cows in the background.  The catalogue number which most closely describes the present painting is Smith no.363; the Duc de Deux-Ponts and Geldemeester provenances, however, are listed under Smith no. 212.  Sedelmeyer's 1895 catalogue entry (see Literature) listed both Smith nos. 212 and 363 for this picture and included the provenance.
