Provenance

Commissioned by Captain Joseph Huddart, FRS (1741-1816), for Brynkir, Cwm Pennant, Wales.

Huddart was an eminent seaman who sailed as Master of various vessels, trading with North America before joining the East India Company  in 1773 during which time he constructed charts of Sumatra and the Indian coast from Bombay to Godavery. In 1791 he became an Elder Brother  of Trinity House and in the same year was elected a member of the Royal Society. In 1793, he was granted first Letters Patent for a rope making invention which subsequently was to make the fortune that enabled him to purchase the Brynkir estate in 1809.
