Description

  • 'Sunball': a rare garden seat
  • 150cm. high by 167cm. wide;
  • 4ft 11in., 5ft 5¾in.
lacquered fibreglass and aluminium, the spherical exterior opening to reveal upholstered seating for two with two fitted trays, a light and speakers, on a swivel foot

Condition

An impressive piece of good overall appearance. The piece has been re-lacquered and re-upholstered and is now in good condition. A few minor nicks and scrapes to finish, but nothing too serious. Small area of lacquer loss to edge of second cover piece, near left hinge facing. Fixing mechanisms of metal caps differ, suggesting one possible replacement, the other with old marks, scratches and dents. Some minor components replaced, probably including aluminium cupholders. The pieces can be dismantled into four sections for transportation. Not tested or guaranteed for electricity. A stylish piece ready for use.

Catalogue Note

The Sunball chair was advertised at the time as an outdoor model for sunning and relaxing. Being kept outside, many pieces have suffered from the strain of wind and weather and show the effects of exposure. The model was issued optionally with a light and speakers. This piece includes both.

According to Selldorf circa 30 of these chairs were produced. A copy of a letter by Herbert Selldorf stating this is available upon request.
