Description

  • An ivory and coral group of Saint Sebastian
the standing figure of the martyred saint bound to a coral tree, the branches with three cherubs, contained in later glazed case

Condition

Overall the condition of the group is very good. The base and trunk of the tree are made up of composite materials, including coral sections, which are fixed with red sealing wax. A wood section under the trunk is visible at the back. This treatment appears to be original. The coral sections appear to be varnished. There is some old glue to the back of the cherubs where they have been previously attached to the coral. Two cherubs are loose, whilst the third on the right, is glued to a coral branch which is slightly loose. The little finger from St Sebastian's proper right hand is missing. There is some minor dirt to the ivory surface.
