Catalogue Note

It would appear that before the publishers distributed uncorrected proof copies of this, the third Harry Potter novel, they circulated photocopies of the text as presented here. This state of the text was presumably given to major booksellers to assist in pre-ordering copies.

The photocopies themselves are paginated but unbound loose leaves, 296 by 210mm. They reveal several sections of the novel in an earlier textual state than hitherto known and therefore an important textual witness between the author's original manuscript and the published novel.
