Catalogue Note

“Yet, despite the universality of Gottlieb’s primal double-image, it strikes one as symbolic of particular dualistic relations, and the longer one contemplates, the greater the number that come to mind. It is remarkable that this should occur in an art that is nothing but abstract, each vertical picture consisting only of two centrally placed, contrasting forms: the upper, a controlled, rounded contained, luminous disc within an halo; the lower, an impetuous, jagged, explosive or disintegrating, opaque area. The “bursts” appear to aim at and succeed in evoking a dual response. They stun with their immediacy while inviting slow reflection.” (Irving Sandler, Adolph Gottlieb, Paintings 1945-1974, exh. cat, New York, André Emmerich Gallery, 1977)
