Exhibited

New York, Xavier Fourcade, Inc., Joan Mitchell: New Paintings, February - March 1981

Condition

This work is in very good condition. The colors are fresh and bright and are more vibrant and saturated than the catalogue illustration. There is light surface soiling predominantly concentrated along the extreme edges. Intermittent cracking is present along the pull margins. The painting exhibits scattered drying cracks concentrated in the thicker passages of impasto. Several of these drying cracks appear under UV light to have benefited from stabilization. There is a vertical area of unobtrusive paint loss extending 14 1/4 - 17 in. from the bottom and 10 1/2 inches in from the right edge. There are three areas of lifting paint that have recently benefited from stabilizing done by Amann & Estabrook Conservation Associates. These areas are located in the right panel as follows: 14 1/2 - 17 in. from the bottom and 8 1/4 - 9 1/2 in. from the right; 10 - 13 1/2 in. from the bottom and 13 1/2 - 17 1/2 in. from the right; 2 1/2 - 4 in. from the bottom and 7 - 7 3/4 in. from the right. There is an area of lifting paint located along the right edge extending 17 ½ - 18 ½ in. from the bottom. There are scattered areas of spot retouching that fluoresce under ultra-violet light inspection. Framed.
