Catalogue Note

A pupil of Jean-Leon Gerome, Godchaux first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1905 with a modelled wax lion. His bronzes were cast by both the Susse and Valsuani foundries in the first part of the 20th century.  Godchaux's style was founded in Gerome's expressiveness, yet exhibits an even more avant-garde spirit than that of his master. This modernity is evident in the impressionistic representation of surface on the present bronze.
