Catalogue Note

This portrait of a young nobleman, indentified as Count Felix de Narbonne Pelet, is part of a long tradition of such representations of children.  The young boy is depicted in full length, wearing a costly suit and brandishing a sword, which may allude to his family's possible military aspirations for his future, or may be a reference to his family's past exploits in this arena.  Very little information regarding the sitter has survived, but his family was one of the oldest in France, with noble origins going back the the 12th century.  The setting is a green and rocky landscape dominated by subdued hues, which sets off the stronger tones used for the young count's face and costume, culminating in his brilliant, saturated red vest.  One of the most attractive parts of this picture is the young boy's face, which is masterfully executed, succeeding in evoking at once a boyish, almost teasing quality in his expression and his clear awareness of himself.
