Catalogue Note

The present work is a rare view of Leiden taken from the north; Van Goyen usually painted the city from the north-east or, with regard to the present painting, further to the left; see, for example, cat. nos. 334, 336, 338 and 339 of H.-U. Beck, under Literature, pp. 164-167. The church at the left is Hoogelandsche Kerk and, moving right, the tower of the Town Hall, the dome of the Marekerk, and the St. Pieterskerk. Dr. Beck believes the painting to be both Hofstede de Groot nos. 120 and 151 and the provenance below reflects this.
